What Are Injury & Disability Insurance Claims ?

Injury & Disability Insurance Claims are claims that you may have under insurance policies providing compensation where you suffer an injury or disability.  Some policies of insurance relate to the injury impacting upon your work, but some policies simply provide you an insurance payment if you suffer a certain type of injury.

Many people are not even aware that they have such insurance policies that they can claim under when injured or disabled by injury or illness.  These insurances can be policies specifically taken out to cover you in the event you suffer an injury or are disabled, such as an income protection insurance policy, and usually client's are aware of these policies.  But in some cases, injury & disablement insurances can be included in insurances you hold but are not obvious to you because the policy has been taken out for another specific type of insurance, for instance, a Life Insurance Policy.  It is always  good idea to check all the insurance policies you have taken out when injured, to ensure that you are not missing an insurance payment entitlement.

If you take out travel insurance for that overseas holiday, the policy may not just be limited to covering your medical expenses overseas if injured. It may have an injury & disability insurance included to provide you with a lump sum payment to compensate you for your injury.

Insurances attached to credit cards, personal loans, mortgages, vehicle finance & Superannuation Funds

Sometimes there is injury & disability insurance attached to credit cards, personal loans, vehicle finance, mortgages, travel related purchases and Superannuation Funds.  For instance, you may not be aware that your Superannuation Fund has an insurance attached to it which will provide you with income payments for a period when you are injured and cannot work. QSuper is one such fund that usually has this income protection insurance attached - you  receive a wage type benefit per fortnight whilst you are unable to work due to injury, for up to a 2 year period. Another example is some American Express (Amex) credit cards have an injury & disability insurance that will provide you with a lump sum amount for certain injuries (ie. $15,000 for a broken leg).

What is very helpful when you are injured is where you have injury & disability insurances attached to credit cards, personal loans, vehicle finance or mortgages. Having regular payments you have to meet to pay off loan or credit card balances can be a real problem when you are injured or sick and cannot work.  In some cases these insurances will meet your regular payments over a certain period of time whilst you are disabled, or provide you with a percentage of the outstanding amount on your loan, credit card, mortgage etc., and in other cases the cover is for the total amount or a capped lump sum payment toward your outstanding balance at the time of your injury or disability.

This is a particular benefit when you have this insurance attached to your mortgage, as if you are injured and cannot work, some policies actually kick in to pay your ongoing mortgage payments, and pay out your mortgage.

Partial & Permanent Disability & Total & Permanent Disability Claims

The other types of injury and disability insurance that is more widely known is insurance that pays you a lump sum payment where you are permanently unable to work , or you are permanently partially impaired by an injury. These insurances are respectively known as Total & Permanent Disability Insurance and Partial & Permanent Disability Insurance. These insurances are often attached to Superannuation Funds and the Super Fund pays for the insurance premiums, so often people are unaware they have these insurance claims when they are injured.

If you have Total & Permanent Insurance attached to your Superannuation, you could be entitled to be quite a substantial payment if you are unable to return to work because of injury or illness.

It does not matter how you sustained the injury or illness to claim for injury & disability insurance

To claim for injury & disability insurance, it normally does not matter how you sustained the injury or illness, as long as it developed to the point of disablement during the coverage period of your insurance.

Also, if you have a motor vehicle accident, workplace injury, medical malpractice claim, or any other personal injury claim resulting from the fault of another, your right to claim under any injury & disability insurances you hold, is additional to your personal injury compensation and cannot be taken into account when calculating your damages amount.
